Why glass?

Glass is heavy, fragile and expensive to ship. We still choose it, for three reasons.

Glass is heavier than plastic, it breaks, and it is noticeably more expensive to ship. We use it in full knowledge of all three drawbacks.

1. It does not touch the taste

Glass is chemically inert: it transfers nothing to what you put in it and absorbs nothing from it. With plastic packaging, particularly for acidic drinks and products kept warm, migration from the packaging into the contents is possible. Pomegranate juice is acidic, which is why this matters to us.

2. It recycles indefinitely

Glass can be melted and reformed into bottles over and over without losing quality. Plastic drops a grade with every cycle and after a few rounds is no longer packaging at all. Producing glass takes energy, that is true; but because it stays in the loop, that energy is not spent on a single use.

3. It shows the product as it is

The colour of pomegranate juice tells you something about the product. A clear bottle lets you see what you are buying. If there is nothing to hide, there is no reason not to show it.

Caps and shipping

Our caps are BPA free. We handle the risk of breakage in transit with dividers and foam inside the box; if a bottle still arrives broken we replace it — a photo is all we need.

What about carbon?

The weight of glass raises transport emissions, and we are not ignoring that. In return the packaging stays in the loop, and because the product is not heat treated it needs no additives to stretch its shelf life. Every packaging decision is a trade-off; this is how we struck ours.
